The Dunwoody Community Garden at Brook Run will open next Sunday, August 23rd. The opening date coincides with the official start of National Community Gardening Week. The US Dept of Agriculture wants citizens to 'connect with the land'.
I 'connected' for nearly five hours Saturday morning with a group of others including Sustainable Pattie, Paige, Rebeca, Angela, some high school kids, a guy who likes math and twine, and a few others.
When I first heard about today's event I thought I would drive up to the garden area, eat a donut or two, pick out a 4' x 8' plot, pull a couple of weeds or something, then be back in bed at 9 AM. (side note: Friday was my wedding anniversary so I treated my wife to a great band at Redfield pool, drank a few beers, and watched the kids swim. I then partnered with Ben and the two of us defeated Dee and Sarah in a late-night game of euchre. Ben is a good euchre partner. No matter how many Hoegaardens he has, his focus remains on the game.)
Things worked out OK, but not as I had planned. I got some sun and exercise at Brook Run. I mostly pounded stakes into the ground after math guy aligned the quadrants. All the people there were nice folks, Someone even made butterscotch cookies. I ate three or four of those.
About ten people focused on spreading the mulch onto the pathways. The mulch pathways separate the plots. We marked 60 plots, but there is room for expansion it seems. I never did get my spot picked, but I'm sure I'll get that detail taken care of. Sustainable Pattie said there's not a bad plot in the bunch.
One person I did not expect to see there this morning was Bob Lundsten. Like me, Bob probably thought donuts would be served. I have quickly learned that Sustainable Pattie's garden posse lives healthier than I do. That is part of the reason I signed up. Hopefully I'll figure out donuts are not the breakfast of champions and I should instead be connecting with the land instead of connecting with the donuts.
Back to Bob. I finally have a nickname for Bob, one I think he can live with. Farmer Bob it is. Since I have yet to select my
If you have a plot and plan on building your box now, I suggest you make the 4' x 8' to the outside of your frame, not inside. Although great care was taken to make sure all the plots are uniform, a few may be an inch or two short.
There will be water at the garden, stored in some sort of large container. This will be less expensive than my idea. I thought it would be cool to dig a canal to Brook Run from the Vernon North stream. The canal could also be used to float logs downstream to Atlanta, and a steam-powered flat boat could carry vegetables back upstream on Wednesdays for the Farmer's Market. Forget about old London cabs. Dunwoody could offer the region's only canal boat tours, just like they did on the Erie Canal back in the mid 1800's.
See you at the garden.

Rick, I made those butterscotch cookies. We love sugar and butter at our house.

Rick,
Looks like another busy day for you. Once again you knocked the cover off the ball with the canal boat tours idea. I disagree with the Farmer Bob moniker though. Most of us just go with "Lundsten." I think Bob calls himself that too. Good news on all the shameless Mellow Mushroom plugs. I contacted management and they are going forward on a free pitcher of beer for you. Stay tuned for time and date. Perimeter mall ready to meet and discuss your boycott due to valet parking. They originally thought their business was off based on bad economy. Awesome band at Redfield. Glad I could share a beer with the Callihan's on their anniversary. Awesome band at Piedmont last night, too.
Do me a favor...find a public basketball hoop in Dunwoody. I have a friend from Indiana who says they are on every corner there, and he wants to shoot hoops after work, but can't find a basket.
Al
Al, there aren't any public hoops in D'woody. THINK ABOUT IT.
Anyway, Manley used to go over to the Baptist Church on Tilly Mill---not sure if he was friends of a member or not. You might be able to get some indoor hoop time at one of the branches of the First Baptist Bank of Dunwoody. I don't think the Day center requires church membership to join their health club and prices were pretty reasonable.
the closest public hoop would be over in Sandy Springs at Hammond Park. St Jude used to have an outdoor hoop in the parking lot, but not sure if it is still there.
As Ken mentions, there are pick-up games during lunch at Dun Baptist gym (membership to Fitness Center required).
None of the swim and tennis clubs around here have them. Tennis courts attract tennis players, basketball hoops attract... ummm, what's the word I'm looking for,... basketball players. Yes, basketball hoops attract basketball players.
My friend Indiana Jed already visited Hammond Park. He is a former all state HS center in Indiana, and the b-ball bro's did him in. He is looking to kick it down a notch, so he doesn't re-blow out his knee, and other things. Maybe you, me and Thaddeus (ex-officio) can go 2 on 2 with him in my driveway. Not exactly a "public hoop" but it would be a kinder/gentler game. So...for the record...no public basket(s) in Dunwoody?
they have backboards on the courts beside Chesnut Elm school (beside PCMS) but no rims.
How much beer is involved and must we actually try the whole b-ball thingy? Being dead and all, the beer's all turned to wine and the only hoops I've seen are halos. Of course, that was from far, far away.
TOD (time of death?)
Let me know when you play, I'm up for a game and can offer up my driveway hoop if so needed.
Game on.
game to 11, win by two or first to 15. Al is a hacker so be warned.
I just got off the phone with the Goddard school folks and they agreed to put hoops (and lights) on their new playground.
At tonight's meeting perhaps I'll speak during public comment and suggest a hoop be installed somewhere on city property.
I'll also ask the guy at the SteamWash car wash if I can put one up over there.
I'll take John as a partner because Thaddeus is like 85 years old, so I here.
We are going 5 on 5. Thaddeus is killer from 3 point land. I am taking Lundsten, Indiana Jed, and Hizzoner (point guard) for my dream team. Ducote Eagle Eight is my bench. We call our own fouls. If the guy on the ground has a pulse...no foul.
Our team name is the Dunwoody FarmHousers. The farmhouse will be printed on our uniforms (with a small royalty to DPT).
I select in this year's draft, 6'2" power forward from Notre Dame, KingJohn. My point guard, none other than Brooklyn NY playground legend, Dick Williams. We need a sharp mind to break down your offense so we pick atty B Anderson. Our final player will be by contest. All interested ballers will line up on the west bank of Vernon North stream. First one to swim across to the east bank is in!
Heneghan a nice match up with Lundsten. I will need to put Indiana Jed on Anderson. Also need to watch Brian. He is a constant offender of the moving pick. Dick Williams choice is genius, and will remain neutral on the flagrant calls. Hizzoner has a little more foot speed but ball handling is a toss up. That leaves me covering you. I will have to lean on Indiana Jed to double up for help.
Post our team name as the Riverdancers. Uniform is black cons, knee high white socks, white gym shorts (the old short kind) and open sleeveless vests. (Irish Celtic theme...not Boston Celtic theme.) We will perform at halftime. To get back on point of your original post, please reach out to Sustainable Patty to make baked organic donuts, to sell as spectator concessions and player nourishment.
Thanks to all of those involved in planting the new Deer Hunting Food plots at Brook Run! I cannot wait for Archery Season. j/k
Martini,
Does DeKalb allow crossbows? My Excalibur needs some real-time practice.
Any profits from the baked organic donuts go back to the garden...
And speaking of back to the garden, come back this Saturday and spread mulch. We can plan the location of the public hoops. Maybe right there in the street by the garden. Not much traffic there.
Rick - Crossbows are permitted, and broad-heads are required. So, break out the Excalibur. Dekalb and Fulton have some Monsters!
